Tunnel to Shorten West Fjords Road

The Icelandic Road Administration has submitted a proposal for an estimate in relation to a tunnel between Arnarfjördur and Dýrafjördur fjords on the West Fjords peninsula, which would shorten the West Fjords route by 27.4 kilometers.

Operations could begin at the end of next year, Morgunbladid reports.

According to the administration, the condition of the current road nr. 60 is unacceptable, with regard to both technical aspects and the safety of travelers. The road is often impassible in winter and there is a danger of avalanches on Hrafnseyrarheidi mountain pass.

Icegrid (Landsnet), which has monopoly status for transmission of electricity in Iceland, has requested that the design of the tunnels include room for an underground cable.
