The construction of a tunnel between Ísafjördur and Bolungavík in the Iceland’s Westfjords will be pushed forward, the Minister of Transport announced on Wednesday.
Önundur Jónsson of the Ísafjördur police told Fréttabladid that the road between Ísafjördur and Bolungavík has become very dangerous.
Due to wet weather conditions there is an increased danger of avalanches falling on the road. Jónsson added that people are afraid to drive from Ísafjördur to Bolungavík.
Minister of Transport Sturla Bödvarsson told Fréttabladid that he would like to see the road system in the Westfjords improving as quickly as possible.
Bödvarsson is expecting a report about the condition of the road which the tunnel would replace in the next few days, and he said he hopes to discuss the speeding-up of the tunnel construction at parliament before New Year.
