A poll conducted April 4 and 5 by MMR shows that voters’ trust in PM Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson is at a historic low, while trust toward the head of the Left Green Movement and the president has increased considerably.
There were 969 respondents in the MMR poll, all of them 18 and older.
Of those who responded, 59.2 percent said they had strong confidence in Katrín Jakobsdóttir, head of the Left Green Movement, while 54.5 felt that way toward President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson. Only 10.1 percent of respondents expressed strong trust toward PM Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, but 21.7 percent said they trusted Finance Minister Bjarni Benediktsson well. Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson was well trusted by 28.6 percent of participants in the poll, but that figure was 37 percent a year ago.
The poll reveals that the political group likeliest to have strong confidence in President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson is those who support the Progressive Party, or 97.2 of them. The majority of supporters of the Progressive Party, or 77.8 percent of them, trust PM Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson well.
The poll was conducted a day after the airing of a program on the Iceland’s National Broadcaster RÚV, where it was revealed that a leak of millions of documents from a Panama law firm connected Sigmundur to a company on Tortola. A prerecorded interview with Sigmundur was aired on the program, where the prime minister was asked about the company. He walked out of the interview when the questions became uncomfortable.
