Truck Drivers Block Road in Protest

Nearly 30 professional truck drivers closed one of the busiest roads in Reykjavík by Ártúnsbrekka for more than 30 minutes yesterday afternoon in protest of high fuel prices and lack of counteractions taken by authorities.

“The authorities have to wake up,” truck driver Sturla Jónsson told Morgunbladid, encouraging the public to take actions too.

Jón Vidar Matthíasson, the capital region fire department marshal, said it can create great danger to close the main traffic veins of the city without warning since ambulance workers and fire fighters rely on them being open.

Jónsson dismissed Matthíasson’s claims as “fear propaganda,” saying truck drivers plan to make similar protests again without notifying the fire department or police authorities beforehand.
