The lives of approximately two thousand chickens were jeopardized as they slid out of a moving van, which was taking them to a slaughterhouse at the town of Hella, South Iceland, Visir.is reports.
South Iceland.
The chickens were kept in more than a hundred containers. According to the Hvolsvöllur Police, a hatch in the car opened causing the boxes to slide out. The driver however did not realize what had happened until he had arrived at his destination. Then, workers at the slaughterhouse as well as the chicken farm rushed to the scene to rescue the birds.
When retrieved, most of the containers were still shut even though several had opened and the chickens they contained had escaped. Even though it was a cold day and harsh conditions, only a few of them were dead. Now, the chickens have been rescued and brought back to the slaughterhouse.
This is the second time in only three days that chickens on their way to the slaughterhouse find themselves in peril of death. Only three days ago, a car containing seven thousand chickens rolled over at Holtavörðuheiði heath. That one was also bringing the chickens to be slaughtered.
