Trial of Deceased Greek Assault Victim in Reykjavík

The case of a Greek tourist who was brutally attacked in Reykjavík in 2010 is currently being heard at Reykjavík District Court. The man died at 31 in Italy in December; his mother said in her testimony by telephone on Tuesday that he committed suicide.

She said she couldn’t state with absolute certainty that the assault led to her son taking his own life. However, he had not suffered mental problems before the trip to Iceland, she added, as reported on

She described that her son had felt very frightened after the attack. His face was severely injured as a consequence and he suffered back and neck pains.

Three men, one of whom is connected with the motorcycle club Outlaws, are charged with having attacked the tourist in central Reykjavík in May 2010.

According to the charge, they beat and kicked the victim’s body, head and face, resulting in a broken nose, bruises and injuries to the face and body.

They all maintain their innocence.

The State Prosecutor has requested information on the man’s death from the Italian police. The principal proceedings of this case will continue until February 6.
