The Icelandic Met Office has issued a statement warning those who intend to travel to the countryside over the holiday period to take extra care.

ICE-SAR recommends that travelers check the forecast before heading out of town, ensure that they have some food with you in the car, as well as a blanket or sleeping bag in case they get stuck.
Travelers are also reminded to let someone know about their travel plans or register them on the website safetravel.is.
