ICE-SAR, the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue, has issued a travel warning for today, due to the weather forecast, which calls for heavy snow and blizzard conditions on mountain roads in East Iceland shortly after noon and later during the day in Northeast Iceland, all the way west to Akureyri in Eyjafjörður fjord.
Travelers are urged to follow the weather forecast closely at en.vedur.is and stay put rather than head out to an area where the forecast is severe. This is specifically true for East and Northeast Iceland today.
The Icelandic Met Office predicts wind speeds of up to 23 m/sec in the east today. South of Vatnajökull glacier, from Lómagnúpur to Berufjörður in the East Fjords, wind gusts of 35-45 m/sec can be expected from noon and into the evening.
Travelers are reminded that the Icelandic Road Administration offers limited service over the Christmas weekend, so it’s essential to look up information on road conditions at road.is before setting off.
The Icelandic Met Office warns travelers that driving conditions could quickly deteriorate today in the east and northeast, due to an intense low pressure system east of the country, causing a blizzard, expected to hit early in the afternoon. Visibility on inland roads will be very poor, due to heavy snowfall and blowing snow.
The storm should die down tomorrow morning, December 24.
