Transplant expert gives presentation in Iceland

The French physician Jean-Michel Dubernard, who made world headlines last year as the first doctor to perform a face transplant, is currently in Iceland. He gave a presentation on transplants at the University of Iceland yesterday.

Dubernard told RÚV about the possibility to transplant organs from genetically modified pigs, so-called “humanized pigs,” into humans. He predicts organ transplants from animals will become more common in the future.

Dubernard was also the first doctor to transplant two hands on a double amputee in 2002.

He is visiting Iceland in relation to the “Pourquoi Pas? – French Spring in Iceland” festival.
