Traders of Iceland Long for Euro

Approximately seventy percent of members of The Federation of Icelandic Trade are in favor of dropping the Icelandic Króna for Euro and fifty seven percent are in favor of joining the EU according to a recent Capasent-Gallup poll.

“The message from the members to the Icelandic authorities is clear. The economic setback we have been through lately has caused a lack of faith in the Krona and people are starting to look at the Krona as some kind of business obstacle. Those results are a cry that the authorities cannot ignore” Knútur Sigmarsson CEO of The Federation of Icelandic Trade in Fréttabladid.

“These results do not surprise me” Vilhjálmur Egilsson, CEO of Service Organization

for Icelandic Industries, says in Fréttabladid. “This is coherent with the opinions of our own members and members who are not part of FIT. But there is a change in opinion about the EU. A few years back, EU membership did not have much support among this group. But members of both [ SOII and FIT] have had enough of devaluations and high interest rates […] and we are sacrificing more benefits for less by our current direction in relation to currency issues.” Egilsson states.
