A couple from the United States was stranded in their jeep for 48 hours due to bad weather in the highlands on Eyjarfjarðarleið over the weekend. They took a turn off Sprengisandur to Laugafell and had planned to reach the Eyjafjörður region in North Iceland from there.

The road was still closed and the jeep got stuck in snow. Conditions were cold with sleet and there was no cell phone reception in the area, visir.is reports.
Yesterday morning, the pair decided to leave the car and walk to the closest inhabited area. After walking for 15 kilometers, they met someone driving along the road, who took them to Akureyri.
The search and rescue team was called and the couple’s jeep was collected.
The search and rescue services wishes to advise people to be well prepared when traveling in Iceland.
