Tourists Seriously Injured in Car Accident

By Iceland Review

Three individuals, two of whom are seriously injured, were taken by Coast Guard helicopter to national university hospital Landspítali in Reykjavík this morning after their SUV overturned by Hellissandur on Snæfellsnes peninsula, West Iceland.

There were six persons in the vehicle, all of whom are foreign tourists, reports.

The police in West Iceland report that there has been an increase in traffic accidents where foreign travelers are involved this winter. They attribute the increase to the growing number of winter tourists, who are unused to Icelandic roads and weather conditions.

Last winter, the police in West Iceland were called out to mountain pass Grjótháls three times because visiting drivers had become stuck in snow—the road is closed in winter.
