On Wikiloc, where anyone can upload GPS coordinates and trails, there are descriptions of treks in Iceland that can prove highly dangerous. Staff of Vatnajökull National Park are concerned that hikers may blindly follow these descriptions and run into trouble.

“Many routes are very good but it also happens that routes are uploaded that are straight-out dangerous,” Helga Davids, a specialist at Vatnajökull National Park, told ruv.is.
“One French tourist who was on his way to Lónsöræfi walked along the car trail and crossed the river Skyndidalsá,” she went on.
“This is a dangerous river which is only passable on modified jeeps and cannot be waded. Such a route should not be advertised,” Helga warned.
