Two local women in Húsavík today stopped and challenged a woman and her two children, who she was allowing to defecate on the sidewalk. The incident took place on a busy harbor-side road where Húsavík residents and visitors assemble in good weather.
Kristín Þorbergsdóttir shared her story on Facebook, asking whether this is okay. She goes on to ask whether there are public conveniences nearby which are not in shops or cafés. Even if not, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants on the street in question which would most likely allow desperate children to use their facilities.
Kristín’s daughter-in-law went over to talk to the tourists: “It was simply impossible to not say anything to them. It was so ridiculous,” she told Vísir.
“I was gob smacked and asked them if they don’t usually use toilets. She responded quickly, asking if there were any toilets here. I answered that she could find toilets all around here.” The two locals tried to impress on the woman that this was very inappropriate behavior. “But she said it was okay because the birds would eat it.”
The tourist then got her children into the car and sped off, leaving her children’s ‘leavings’ where it lay in some gravel by the sidewalk.
“I find it so strange. I don’t understand how they think to do this. No Icelander would dream of pooing there. I’m wondering if it might be that they were told that it’s okay.”
This is just the latest in a string of related news stories over the last few weeks and months.
