The woman had been out on the town, when she accepted a ride from a stranger, Fréttablaðið reports.

The man drove the woman to a store in the eastern part of the city, to which he had access, where he raped her and caused her severe physical injuries. Afterwards he took her to the guesthouse where she was staying.

Upon seeing the woman’s condition, the staff immediately called the police and the woman was taken to the emergency room for victims of sexual violence at Landspítali, the National Hospital.

The woman, who was supposed to fly back to her home country the next morning, left 24 hours after the attack.
