Tourist Missing in Southwest Iceland

Between 70 and 80 search and rescue volunteers are searching for a man who was reported missing yesterday afternoon. The man, who is a foreign citizen on a visit to his relatives in the country, is believed to be lost on Reykjanes peninsula, Southwest Iceland.

The search was launched after the man’s relative contacted the police in Keflavík, concerned about his safety, as stated in a press release by search and rescue association ICE-SAR.

Emergency authorities have managed to establish mobile phone connection with man on and off but he has not been able to clearly state his whereabouts. He informed the search parties that he was wet and cold.

They searched for him the entire night and a Coast Guard helicopter flew over the search area using special equipment to locate his mobile phone but did not prove fully successful.

The search continues. At the moment the area north of Keflavík and on Miðnesheiði, towards Sandgerði, is being searched.
