Tourist Falls into Hot Spring

A foreign tourist in his late sixties was transported by the Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter to Landspítali University Hospital after falling into an 96˚C (205˚F) hot spring by the so-called Secret Lagoon at Flúðir, South Iceland, RÚV reports. The man, who suffered serious burns to his body, was transported by ambulance towards the helicopter in order to save time. He is in intensive care at the hospital.

It is thought that the man stepped into the hot spring, not realizing how hot it was. He had previously been bathing in the Secret Lagoon. According to police, it appears he stepped out of the natural spring and took a walk around. A short distance from the Lagoon, he either stepped or fell into the hot spring. He suffered burns on his hands, legs and chest.

The South Iceland Police are investigating the accident.
