A man escaped injury after falling into a crevasse near Öxará waterfall at Þingvellir National Park yesterday. A search and rescue team from the nearby town of Selfoss was able retrieve the man, a foreign tourist, from the crevasse, which was 20-30 m (65-100 ft.) deep, ruv.is reports.

The man was walking in an open area when he suddenly slipped into the snow-covered crevasse and disappeared from sight. The rescue operation took approximately an hour meaning that the man was stuck for about one and a half hours in total.

He was able to converse with the rescuers and did not sustain any injuries in the fall. A member of the rescue team abseiled into the crevasse and was able to link the man to rescue equipment so that he could be towed up to safety. The man, who is approximately thirty years old, was able to walk away from the crevasse, accompanied by the rescue team.
