Tourist Dies Following Diving Accident

A Chinese woman, who had an accident while diving in the Silfra fissure in Þingvellir National Park on Tuesday, has died. She was 26 years old and lived in the US, according to the Facebook page of the South Iceland Police, who are handling the investigation.

The accident occurred shortly before 1 pm on Tuesday. The woman, who was visiting the country with her husband, was diving with a guide, who, with the help of another diver, was able to bring her out of the water, Vísir reports.

The woman was transported to Reykjavík Airport by the Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter and from there by ambulance to Landspítali National University Hospital.

This is the third time in six years that a serious diving accident happens in Silfra, according to Vísir. Rules for diving were tightened following a fatal accident there in December of 2012. Close to 30,000 tourists dive in the fissure every year.
