A foreign tourist died in the National and University Hospital in Reykjavík on Wednesday, following a head injury sustained at Reynisfjara beach the previous day. RÚV reports that the woman, who was eighty years old, was on holiday with her family when she fell on the footpath leading from the parking lot to the beach. After her fall, a helicopter was called to the scene on Tuesday afternoon to transport the injured woman back to Reykjavík for medical attention.
This incident is the most recent accidental death in South Iceland in 2018. There have been eleven such deaths in nine separate incidents in South Iceland so far this year, with seven of the deceased being foreign tourists who were visiting on holiday. By comparison, there was a total of 13 accidental deaths in South Iceland during the whole of 2017.
