Tourist Coach Destroyed in Fire

“The coach is totally ruined,” says Gunnar M. Guðmundsson, CEO of tour company SBA Norðurleið.

One of the company’s coaches caught fire yesterday, leaving the vehicle far beyond repair. The incident occurred at Víkurskarð, between Akureyri and Húsavík, Vísir reports.

Gunnar says that the cause of the fire is unknown: “Nobody knows that and probably never will,” he said—though it seems likely it started in the engine, as the vehicle was in motion when the fire was noticed.

There were around 20 people on the coach at the time, but all were able to evacuate the vehicle safely—even managing to get all luggage to a safe distance as well.

“People just took their stuff and then an attempt was made to extinguish it, but that didn’t work with hand fire extinguishers. There was enough time and there was no panic. But attempts with fire extinguishers didn’t work and that’s the way it went.”

Gunnar says he personally set off straight away with another coach to fetch the passengers from Víkurskarð, “But it turns out they didn’t need it as there were so many of our coaches there en-route which took the people.”

SBA Norðurleið is one of Iceland’s biggest travel companies and runs an extensive scheduled and private hire coach service. The company’s safety record is very good.
