Tom Cruise to Celebrate 50th Birthday in Iceland

American actor Tom Cruise is expected to arrive in Iceland in June along with the film crew of Oblivion, directed by Josheph Kosinski, which will be shot in the country. Cruise’s 50th birthday is coming up on July 3 and he is allegedly planning to celebrate it in Iceland.

According to Fréttablaðið’s sources, Cruise’s wife Katie Holmes will be in attendance and among friends of theirs invited to the party are celebrity couples David and Victoria Beckham and Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Cruise mentioned his upcoming birthday in an interview on the American television show Extra in December last year where he said he was determined to celebrate it “some place” even though he probably would be working.

The Icelandic production company True North will service the Oblivion film crew in Iceland and assist with the shooting, which will mostly take place in the highlands.

Producer Leifur B. Dagfinnsson at True North confirmed the arrival of the Oblivion crew this summer to ruv.is yesterday; the first members are expected to arrive next month.

His company will service another large Hollywood project this year; Ben Stiller is expected in the autumn to shoot The Secret Life of Walter Mitty in Reykjavík, Seyðisfjörður, Stykkishólmur and Höfn, among other locations.

Iceland is becoming an increasingly popular destination among film crews—Prometheus by director Ridley Scott was shot in Iceland last year—which could give the economy a big boost.

Prometheus delivered more than ISK 740 million (USD 5.8 million, EUR 4.4 million) in revenue in foreign currency and state revenue from Stiller’s and Cruise’s movies could amount to almost ISK 1.5 billion (USD 11.7 million, EUR 8.9 million).

Leifur said other film projects are also coming up.
