Today is Easter Sunday

Today is the fourth day of the Easter weekend, and the highpoint of the celebrations.

Easter Sunday, Páskadagur in Icelandic, is sometimes called Resurrection Day and the Bible celebrates Jesus’s coming back to life after his crucifixion on Good Friday. Church services are held in almost every town and village.

In Christianity, today is a joyous and holy day, and most people—both religious and not—in Iceland will celebrate with a large meal with family and/or friends. Roast lamb or turkey are common choices.

Today is also marked by the consumption of large quantities of chocolate in the form of Easter eggs.

Icelandic Easter eggs are a special delicacy and a national institution; as they are hand finished with festive decorations and are filled with candy. They also come with a proverb on a small slip of paper. Families often gather round to share their proverbs and decipher what on earth they could possibly mean…

The three main chocolate companies in Iceland have been busy making eggs since Christmas finished.
