Thunder and Lightning in Reykjavík

Many Reykjavík residents have heard the sound of thunder today, and the sky has been lit up with thunderbolts. According to the Iceland Met Office the air is very cold above the clouds but the air closer to earth is much warmer, which is the ideal atmosphere for a lightning show.

Most flashes of lightning have been seen in the south of Iceland, more than 100, but they have also been been from Snæfellsnes in the west to Vatnajökull glacier in the southeast.

A weather like this is unusual in Iceland, but in the past two days the country has been hit by depressions and another one is due tomorrow, Wednesday.
