A 20-year-old man was found guilty of rape and sentenced to three years in prison at the Reykjavík district court on Friday.
The crime was committed one year ago when the man followed a 19-year-old woman into a restroom stall and forced her to have sexual intercourse. Morgunbladid reports.
The Reykjavík district court had already acquitted the man, although it had been proved that he had intercourse with the woman against her will. But because she did not resist or try to call for help, the Reykjavík district court did not define the act as a rape. Iceland’s Supreme Court overturned the district court’s decision.
The Reykjavík district court re-opened the case and found the man guilty of rape and he will now face three years in prison.
