Today, Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament, passed a bill presented by Minister of the Interior Ólöf Nordal, bringing major changes to the judicial system. The bill involves the establishment of a third tier in the judicial system, which now consists of the district courts and the Supreme Court. The third and middle tier to be added will be a so-called Landsréttur or ‘Land’s Court.’
The bill also includes major changes to the courts’ administration. It was passed unanimously with 46 votes.
With the addition of a new court, state spending is expected to increase by ISK 109.7 million (USD 876,000, EUR 783,000) per year 2018-2021, compared to this year’s spending.
