Three Iceland Power Plant Options off the Table

The National Energy Authority has decided to withdraw three of the power plant options submitted to the task force working on the third stage of the framework program for energy harnessing and nature protection as they were located within Vatnajökull National Park.

The authority announced to the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources that the proposed hydropower plants Arnardalsvirkjun, Helmingsvirkjun and Vetrarveita in Hálslón have been withdrawn following remarks from the park’s chief ranger Hjörleifur Finnsson, ruv.is reports.

The authority explained that upon closer inspection it turned out that the map which had been used for estimating the power plant options did not include the latest information on the boundaries of Vatnajökull National Park.
