Three dogs have been on the loose on and around Mosfellsheiði heath outside Reykjavík since mid-June, where sheep were grazed in the summer, and killed 65 sheep from seven farms in Mosfellsdalur, Þingvallasveit and Ölfus. Many more are missing.
Bjarni Bjarnason, farmer at Hraðastaðir, happened upon the dogs as they were attacking a lamb in a coordinated manner during a recent roundup. “We contacted the dog inspector in Mosfellsbær. Two dogs were captured but the third got away,” he told dv.is.
Dog inspector Hafdís Óskarsdóttir confirmed that two of the dogs had been caught and put down. The third is being searched for. The dogs were Icelandic sheep dogs and mixed breeds.
It has been confirmed that 65 sheep have been killed by the dogs but almost 100 are missing.
“There may be more but we won’t know for sure until the roundup has been completed, which won’t happen until next month,” said farmer Jóhannes Sveinbjörnsson, who has lost eight sheep.
