The three men, who were crew members for the shipping company Eimskip, have confessed to their involvement in the case, mbl.is reports
Two of the men were travelling on a small fishing boat between the mainland and the Westman Islands and were arrested after police, who were monitoring their movements, caught them bringing the cargo to land. It had been stored in plastic containers dumped in the ocean and attached to floats by the third man, a member of the crew of the freighter Brúarfoss, ruv.is reports. He was arrested when the boat arrived in Reykjavík.
The investigation, which had been ongoing for several weeks, was the result of close cooperation between the police in the Westman Islands and customs authorities.
