Thousands to Rally against Government Today

Over 6,000 people are expected to attend an anti-government rally in Austurvöllur square in front of Iceland’s parliament at 5 pm this afternoon.

People have posted 100 reasons for attending the protest on the event’s Facebook page. The most ‘liked’ reasons include corruption, not honoring election promises including a referendum on EU accession, the breakdown of the country’s healthcare system and wage inequality.

Protestors are encouraged to bring keys with them, both to create noise but also to send a message to the government that their time is up, Vísir reports.

Several other anti-government protests have taken place since the Progressive Party-Independence Party coalition took office in 2013. Among the issues that have previously been highlighted by protestors are the so-called ‘leak affair’ and Iceland’s withdrawal from EU accession talks without putting the issue up for referendum.

As of 10 am this morning, 6,300 people had stated via Facebook that they would attend the protest.
