Thousands Plan to March in Memory of Birna

More than 4,200 people are planning to attend a memorial gathering in downtown Reykjavík tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) for Birna Brjánsdóttir, the 20-year-old Icelandic woman whose body was discovered in Reykjanes last Sunday. She had been missing since January 14. Two men are in custody, suspected in her death.

The gathering convenes at 4 pm at Laugavegur 116, by Hlemmur, from where people will march down Laugavegur at 4:30. Those who bring flowers will place them at Laugavegur 31, where Birna was last seen on security cameras early Saturday morning, January 14.

The march then proceeds down Ingólfsstræti, all the way to Arnarhóll, where candles will be lit in Birna’s memory.

Some streets in downtown Reykjavík will be closed to motorized vehicles during the march, and parts of Lækjargata are likely to close earlier.

Memorial gatherings for Birna are also planned by Akureyri Church at 5 pm, by Stafkirkja church in Vestmannaeyjar islands at 4 pm, in Reyðarfjörður at 5 pm, and by the Icelandic embassy in Copenhagen at 1 pm local time.
