Thousands Accept Charity in Iceland

The charity Fjölskylduhjálp Íslands donated around 6,000 food packages before Christmas. Volunteers filled bags of food for people of all ages, ranging from young pregnant women with small children to senior citizens.

“We have noticed a significant increase in people in need of donations compared to last Christmas and these are new faces we’re seeing now. It’s evident that the situation is worsening,” volunteer Hjörtur Howser told

Among those accepting a donation of food for the first time was Heiðbjört Erla Árnadóttir. “It kills me to come here and ask for food but I’m suffering from 75 percent disability and need it to survive.”

Heiðbjört calls for complete reviewing of the affairs of the disabled.

Other charities have also organized food donations this month. Mæðrastyrksnefnd handed out more than 3,000 food packages on December 19 and maintain that poverty is spreading in Iceland.
