Thousand Icelandic Sites Hacked

Around 1,000 successful cyber attacks on Icelandic websites have taken place this year, according to the hacker site Zone-H.org. Visir.is reports that the attacks are usually performed in order to demonstrate the weaknesses of websites or to shut them down.

The site includes entries from hackers about what cyber attacks they have carried out. One thousand are listed on the site, but it is assumed that there have been many more which are not listed there.

Among the sites listed are the sites of an accounting company, law firms, Laugar Spa, Frumherji (testing and inspections company), Samtökin ’78 (The National Queer Organization) and Vífilfell (beverage company).

On a single day, on June 3, 136 sites were hacked. According to Helgi Hrafn Gunnarsson, a programmer and MP for the Pirate Party, told visir.is that there are “millions” of hacks on Icelandic sites each year. “Cyber attacks are something that network administrators need to constantly think about. Cyber attacks are a daily occurrence.”

Helgi says that the issue of cyber security has not been given the attention it needs in Iceland.
