Thirty-Nine Hours to Cycle Ring Road

It took the winning team, Workforce, just 39 hours and 12 minutes—a new record—to cycle Iceland’s Ring Road 1 in the Wow Cyclothon on Thursday. The second-placed team, Örnin Trek, arrived at almost the same time.

Workforce, who cycled at an average speed of 35 miles per hour, commented to visir.is that the reception by onlookers had been great, particularly in the south of the country. Not everyone was pleased with the competition, though. Police reported that they received numerous complaints from drivers who were unhappy about cyclists blocking the road.

More than 500 people and 60 teams took part in this year’s competition. The event aims to raise ISK 10 million (USD 88,000, EUR 65,000) for Landspítali National University Hospital’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery. The team Hjólakraftur has raised the most money, ISK 730,000 (USD 6,400, EUR 4,700).
