A total of 39 people have applied for the job of director of RÚV, the National Icelandic Broadcasting Service, following Páll Magnússon’s resignation, visir.is reports.

Among the applicants, the list of which has been made public, are two theater directors, a radio programmer, a tinsmith, two salespeople, a builder and a librarian. On the list are several prominent Icelanders including former MPs Ólína Þorvarðardóttir, Stefán Jón Hafstein and Kolbrún Halldórsdóttir (Kolbrún is also a former minister), filmmaker Hrafn Gunnlaugsson, actress Edda Björgvinsdóttir, theater director Magnús Geir Þórðarson and RÚV radio producer Ólafur Páll Gunnarsson.
The position became available after Páll resigned in mid-December following the announced that 60 people were to lose their jobs at the broadcaster. In his statement to his staff, he said that he feels that the board of RÚV does not trust him enough.
More than 10,000 people signed a petition urging the Icelandic government to reverse recently announced planned budget cuts to the National Broadcasting Corporation RÚV.
RÚV was established in 1930 and was the first radio station in Iceland. The broadcaster then moved into television in 1966 and held a monopoly there for 20 years.
