Third fatal traffic accident this year

A man close to 20 died when his vehicle went off the road in Nordurárdalur, north Iceland, early yesterday morning. This is the third fatal traffic accident this year although, by this same time last year nine people had been killed in traffic accidents.

A motorist notified police about the accident at 7 am yesterday morning, but it was not clear when the accident had taken place. Ragnar Kristjánsson, the senior officer on duty at the police in Akureyri, told Fréttabladid it is also unclear how the accident occurred.

According to information from the police in Saudárkrókur, in whose jurisdiction the accident occurred, the car was almost unrecognizable after the accident. The man is believed to have died immediately and he was probably not wearing a seatbelt.

Police and the Road Accident Analysis Group are investigating the case.
