The youngest member of Parliament speaks for the first time

Jóhanna María Sigmundsdóttir, a member of the Icelandic Parliament, or Alþingi, spoke before the assembly for the very first time today.

Jóhanna María represents the Progressive Party, and is the youngest member of parliament ever to serve in Alþingi. She was the first speaker in today’s debates, and talked about domestic violence and its severe consequences. She asked Parliament to be vigilant and constantly on guard for this societal foe.

Jóhanna María is only 21 year old but turns 22 on June 28. Despite her young age, she has accomplished plenty in her youth. She led the Youth League for the Progressive Party in 2012, and was among candidates running for a place in Alþingi in the 2013 election.

In her Alþingi profile, she is said to come from the farm Látrum in the Mjóafjörður fjord. She graduated as an agronomist from the Agricultural University of Iceland (AUI) in 2012 and is an experienced farmer.
