The Rake’s Progress premiered in Iceland

The opera The Rake’s Progress, Flagari í framsókn in Icelandic, by Igor Stravinsky will open at the Icelandic Opera in Reykjavík next month.

Featured singers will be soprano Hulda Björk Gardarsdóttir, tenor Gunnar Gudbjörnsson, baritone Ágúst Ólafsson, bass Jóhann Smári Saevarsson, mezzo soprano Ingveldur Ýr Jónsdóttir, and mezzo sopranos Sigrídur Adalsteinsdóttir and Eyjólfur Eyjólfsson, according to mbl.is.

The Icelandic Opera was founded by a group of opera singers led by famed tenor Gardar Cortes in 1978. Its first project was the performance of I Pagliacci by Leoncavallo in March 1979.

The Icelandic Opera is now housed in “The Old Cinema” in central Reykjavík, which is one of the city’s main landmarks.
