The Icelandic Handball Team Fights for Olympics

The men’s handball team is now preparing for a playoff against Argentina, Sweden and Poland for a chance at the Olympics in Beijing in August.

Only two of those teams will make it to Beijing and Gudmundur Gudmundsson, coach of the Icelandic team is hopeful. “We are very excited and the group is good. No players suffer from injures so we will have the strongest team possible” Gudmundsson told Fréttabladid.

The playoff is scheduled to be held in Poland and the first game, Iceland vs. Argentina, will be held tonight. Argentina is believed to be the weakest of the four teams, but Gudmundson and the team are not letting their guard down. “If we are not focused we will never make it. Our strongest lineup will face Argentina and no one is allowed to save their energy for other, stronger opponents in this game” Gudmundsson said.
