The Horses Are Off to Sweden

A total of 1501 horses were exported from Iceland in 2005, compared to 1578 in 2004 and 1455 in 2003. Of the horses sold last year, 335 went to Sweden, 320 to Denmark and 269 to Germany. Even though Sweden represented the biggest buyer, sales figures dropped by 34% compared to the year before. Only one horse went to Luxembourg.

Altogether, 34,095 horses were sold to overseas buyers between 1988 and 2005. The peak years were 1993 to 1997, when 2500-2840 horses were exported annually.
