If there is a reason for it, the State Prosecutor has sufficient legal authority to freeze assets, Minister of Finance Steingrímur J. Sigfússon told mbl.is. He expects such action to be taken shortly.

The need for a largely increased budget allocation to the Appointed Attorney, especially with the purpose of investigating transactions in the banking system during the months prior to the collapse, is now beginning to surface.
According to Sigfússon, his Party Members have discussed implementing special legal authority which would facilitate the freezing of assets.
As for foreign tax havens, Sigfússon says that British and Dutch assistance is a part of the agreement. There is also reason for monitoring this more thoroughly in other countries, naming Luxembourg as an example. “In fact I have considered pressing for this, by contacting Luxembourg directly,” Sigfússon said.
