The Curtain Falls: Women Discuss Sexual Harassment in Theatre and Film

Women who work or have worked in theatre and film in Iceland have shared testimonials of sexual harassment, violence, and discrimination in the industries over the last several days, RÚV reports. The testimonials have come forth anonymously in a closed Facebook group, and 62 have since been shared with media in a document titled “The Curtain Falls” (Tjaldið fellur).

A total of 584 women in theatre and film have also signed a statement asserting nearly all women experience harassment and discrimination during their career in the field and calling on institutions such as theatres and production companies to address the issue and develop a response plan.

Þórdís Elva Þorvaldsdóttir, Sara Marti Guðmundsdóttir, and Silja Hauksdóttir, three women who work in the industries, were guests on the talk show Kastljós (Spotlight) last night to discuss the issue.

Women in politics in Iceland also formed a closed Facebook group recently called “In the Shadow of Power” (Í skugga valdsins) and have since released over 100 anonymous testimonials from the group to the media.
