The 2009 Cod War Has Begun

The second annual Cod War, a music competition on behalf of Icelandic record label Cod Music, has begun. Last year 100 bands submitted their material, which is more than the organizers dared hope for, so they expect even more bands to participate this year.

The competition takes place exclusively online. Bands log on to and submit two to four songs that a jury will review. Songs can be submitted until May 1 and the winner will be announced on May 15.

There is only one rule in the Cod War and that is that all songs are original compositions. Age, musical genre and whether participants have previously released albums is insignificant.

It is absolutely free to participate in the Cod War and the winner might earn a record contract at Cod Music; first studio time and a marketing campaign for one song will be organized. The winner also receives a box of cod liver oil and ten kilos of cod.

Last year’s winner was Icelandic musician Steini who was subsequently signed with Cod Music and released the critically-acclaimed album Human Comfort.
