Tents For Rent On New Year’s Eve

Accommodation in Reykjavík city is almost fully booked for New Year’s Eve, so Airbnb hosts have offered campers and tents to travellers, Túristi.is reports. Travellers are flocking to Reykjavík for New Year’s Eve to experience the passing of the year in Iceland.

At this point in time, only 1% of lodgings in the capital area are available for New Year’s Eve. A number of campers, caravans, and tents have popped up recently on the Airbnb website, with aspiring hosts looking to cash in on the passing of the old year. At one point, a car was available for an overnight stay, but it has now been removed.

A cold wave has hit the country in recent weeks, so a night spent in a tent, or camper, in the cold December frost is not optimal lodging.

Skapti Örn Ólafsson, the public relations officer for The Icelandic Travel Industry Association, had this to say: “It is unacceptable that travellers are being offered a stay in old cars, or tents and caravans, especially at this time of year when the weather can be unpredictable. We have seen cases such as these with the unchecked expansion of Airbnb lodgings. Safety and quality, of any kind, is completely overlooked.”

Hotel prices have risen sharply with the increased demand, so many travellers have opted for stays in Airbnb homes this New Year’s Eve.
