Tenants Sue Icelandic Tycoon Couple

The tenants of an apartment in the Ian Schrager building on Gramercy Park in Manhattan, which is owned by Icelandic tycoon Jón Ásgeir Jóhannesson and his wife Ingibjörg Pálmadóttir, have filed a lawsuit against the couple for establishing an “ugly” IKEA kitchen in their apartment.

According to NYDailyNews.com, the couple bought the apartment for more than USD 10 million (EUR 7 million) in 2007 and shortly afterwards they purchased another apartment in the building, mbl.is reports.

They then leased the first apartment and the tenants were dissatisfied with the way it looked with a kitchen from IKEA.

The tenants said they were ashamed of it because the building’s website says that all bathrooms and kitchens were designed specifically for the apartments in the building.

Furthermore, the tenants have complained that the air conditioning is broken and the shower is not working properly.

They also stated that in July last year, leftover food was thrown down to the apartment’s balcony from the balcony above it, which belongs to the apartment where Jóhannesson and his wife live.

Paramount Realty Group, which rents the apartment, is demanding USD 52,000 (EUR 39,000) in compensation. The company has paid USD 312,000 (EUR 231,000) in rent.
