Ten Suspected of Drug Smuggling

Ten people are in police custody in Suðurnes, Southwest Iceland, suspected of drug smuggling, according to Fréttablaðið. The individuals, two women and eight men, arrived in the country on separate flights, either carrying the drugs internally or in their luggage.

Chief Inspector Jón Halldór Sigurðsson stated the cases have all come up in the past two months. “All of these [involve] strong narcotics, either cocaine or amphetamine. Also MDMA substances,” he stated. The total amount of drugs smuggled is a few kilograms.

The people in custody include one US citizen, two Brazilians and seven people from the Netherlands, or with a connection to the Netherlands, such as through the former Dutch colony Suriname.

Jón noted it’s not clear whether this is a sign that drug smuggling has substantially increased, or whether the finds can be explained as luck.
