Around 700 people, mostly teenagers, had registered their names on a MySpace website called “Association against Poles in Iceland” yesterday where many disparaging remarks about Icelandic residents of Polish origin can be found.
The website was launched on Friday by a 14-year-old Reykjavík resident. On the website he states that “Icelanders have to get rid of the Poles before it is too late” and claimed they were “ruining things” and “pretended to own the country,” Fréttabladid reports.
“This is very bad news,” said Einar Skúlason, director of Ahús, the Intercultural Center in Reykjavík. He does not believe that the prejudice against Polish immigrants originates among the teenagers themselves but is an echo of what they have heard from older people.
“I encourage parents […] to explain this matter thoroughly to their children. One cannot judge a group of people although people may have negative opinions of certain individuals,” Skúlason said, adding that there is reason to worry about mass hysteria.
Police are going to investigate the website since some of the posted remarks may be in breach of the law.
