A 15-year-old male was found unconscious on the bottom of a swimming pool in Reykjavík suburb Kópavogur yesterday. Attempts at resuscitation were successful, and the boy is being kept unconscious on a respiratory machine at the National Hospital.
The boy was found one meter under water in the middle of the swimming pool about 10am yesterday morning. He was there with his schoolmates at swimming practice. It is unclear what caused the accident, as RÚV reports.
The boy was separated from his schoolmates and it is not known how long he was underwater before he was discovered and dragged out of the pool. Doctors at the National Hospital would not reveal any details but said the boy’s condition was critical.
According to Vildís Gudmundsdóttir, director of the swimming pool, there were many people in the pool at the time and two lifeguards on patrol in addition to the swimming instructor.
Video from the pool’s CCTV cameras have been sent to police for investigation.
