Teenager Dies During Football Practice

An 18-year-old boy collapsed at the beginning of a football practice at Reykjavík sports club ÍR yesterday evening. Immediate attempts were made to save his life but they were in vain and the boy was announced dead shortly afterwards.

The boy is not known to have suffered from any underlying diseases. The cause of death has yet to be determined, but it is believed that he had a heart attack, Morgunbladid reports.

“It is an immense shock and we are grief-stricken,” said chairman of ÍR Úlfar Steindórsson. A priest was contacted, who organized an event of prayer with those who trained with the boy and their parents.

The boy had also helped coach younger teams and worked at summer courses for many years.

“He was uniquely level-headed and a good boy and his death is a shock for the entire Breidholt neighborhood,” said chairman of ÍR’s premier football league Bragi Björnsson. “He will be missed.”
