Teenage girls accidently attacked by police

Two teenage girls were blinded as police sprayed teargas over fighting youths outside a club in Reykjavík last Saturday night.

Sara Brynjólfsdóttir and Íris Óskarsdóttir were queuing outside nightclub Sólon when the police appeared to stop a fight.

According to the girls, the officers started spraying teargas without warning, which drifted with the wind to the people in the queue. Fréttabladid reports.

The teenage girls caught the gas in their eyes and were blinded. Sara (19) walked weeping over to the officer holding the spray can and asked why she had been targeted. He simply told her to go away.

The staff at Sólon attended to the girls until the father of one of them picked them up. Police said it had not been their intention to spray teargas on bystanders and that it is their policy to handle the gas with extreme care.
